Abstract
The purpose of this study is to clarify the consumption characteristics and expenditure patterns of baby boomer households by comparing them with those of the elderly. To this end, the 2013 Household Income and Expenditure Survey conducted by Statistics Korea was analyzed, and the following major results were found. First, almost all expenditure amounts and expenditure weights were statistically significantly different between the baby boomers and the elderly. Second, according to a cluster analysis, 58.5 percent of baby boomers were classified as having balanced expenditures, followed by education-dominated, housing-dominated, and transport- dominated expenditures. The education-dominated and transport-dominated expenditure households were found only in the baby boomers. Last, a comparison of the demographic and economic characteristics of the households associated with each expenditure pattern revealed that those having the housing-dominated type of expenditure were relatively poor in both groups.
